Jupiter Predicts $35 Billion Online Ad Spend…and what of Digital Signage?
Filed Under Advertising, Digital Signage | 1 Comment
IMHO this needs to be taken with a bit of a grain of salt. Back in the dot com heyday, Jupiter used to tout some research stats about markets and industry that - to put it mildly - involved a lot of hubris.
In other words, their statements have always been…bold.
There’s brief note on Mediapost

about a research report that predicts online spending will grow to 35 Billion from this year’s 19.9 Billion.

P&G Weighs In - The Coming of Age for Retail Media
Filed Under Advertising, Digital Signage | 2 Comments
Now here’s a wow factor.
P&G just shifted $2 Billion into the direct control of Brand Managers.
I’m heralding today, June 18th, 2007, the coming of age day of retail media. Thank you P&G.

What this $2 Billion dollar shift means is that the guys and gals who currently control each Brand’s measured media advertising budgets now get to control an additional media pie - at retail media.

Porsche And It’s Jump to Narrowcasting…on TV
Filed Under Advertising, Digital Signage | Leave a Comment
Just read an interesting article on Mediapost…
…about Porche USA and their move to advertise on a Narrowcast network. No….not Digital Signage, but Plum TV, a series of local Television channels in high net worth areas…

InfoComm

is also getting into the fray next week with a dedicated section for Digital Signage at their show on Tuesday/Wed.
One of the more interesting things that I think they are doing is the application showcase which is an immersive environment where you can actually see a live environment (e.g. a mock Bar or airport) and the hardware/software/content running live inside it. Given how “visually centered” most people are and the fact that a lot of this tech is much more attractive when actually implemented, I think this may work quite well for the attendees & buyers.
I know that firmChannel, Digital View, Ingram and a few others will all be present

Brand Activation Conference for Digital Signage
Filed Under Advertising, Digital Signage, metrics | Leave a Comment
Thought I’d kick out a piece on what Dave Laird and the guys at The Strategy Institute are putting out there.
Next Monday is the “Brand Activation Strategies using Digital Out-Of-Home Media Conference”….whew that was a mouthful…held in New York at Bridgewaters (pseudo financial district)
Itis heavily tailored to how to use the medium effectively and what you can expect out of your media investment. Really, my favourite topics
I’m doing my very best to get down there but am a little locked with a program launch. If you’re going to be there, let me know

Converting Heat into Sound to Power Digital Signage
Filed Under Digital Signage, Tools | Leave a Comment
Now this is in the range of the bizarro and somewhat cool but I could see a potential application for Outdoor Signage.

The egg-heads at the University of Utah have found a (better) way of converting heat thrown off by things like latops by using thermoacoustic engines. They take the heat, convert it to a sound as loud as a rock concert and then convert it to electricity.

And they’re the size of a matchbox.

Using Digital Signage to Support the Local Farm
Filed Under Advertising, Digital Signage | Leave a Comment
Now here’s an interesting trend going on that could confound the National Ad Spends. It’s small but man, if it got big, every Brand would have to retool something fierce. Each Brand would have to become a Wal-Mart unto themselves and source everything relatively locally (ok fine…Wal-Mart just pretends to source locally for a few minor lines).

Points out an interesting trend on “LocaVores” - Those who only consume food developed local to their markets. It comes from an interesting stat that I didn’t know which says:
that the average American meal travels 1,500 miles before it lands on the dinner plate
wow

I’ve been debating about whether or not to post this but finally said “why not?”. For some reason I felt it was a bad idea….
A client of mine recently contacted a VERY large media buying organization in Manhattan about buying space on Digital Signage screens. He had a substantial budget to spend.
This is the email stream that he forwarded me on his interactions with them. JACK MEDIABUYER is actually the top media buyer at this Media company in the Digital space.
While it’s disheartening, it is educational. I may be wrong but the boilerplate answer that comes back as final tells me Digital Signage hasn’t made its way far enough into the trenches yet.

no volunteer host, as yet … hint hint
for those who have not been to one, this is just a casual get-together of people in the digital signage industry … no speeches, no presentations, only a handful of arrests and no charges that have stuck … one of the attending companies usually drops down a credit card and buys a few plates of nibblies
if you are thirsty and looking to meet a few people in the industry, come on by … bring cards
