Quantcast

I was up way too early this morning (for me anyway) and happened to have the TV on while I was working. Low and behold I see an ad/infomercial complete with Captain Kirk…err…Willam Shatner,

Capt Kirk

pumping Rogers’ new video phone:

Rogers Vid Phone

Pretty cool little service that allows you to call someone and turn on video calling with 1 button push. I heard on the infomercial that they’re giving the service away free for 36 months (now if only I could get them to do that for my blackberry plan I’d be smiling)

Now where I started thinking this was cool was its potential application to Digital Signage.

There are a bunch of “Text to Screen” and “Call to Screen” Applications out there which “enable” and “engage” that are pretty neat and potentially useful. They allow you to control the presentation or content on any given IP connected screen. See:

Wiffiti
Locamoda

Which add some interactivity and the Advertising business’ favorite word “Engagement”.

But I really like where this could go in terms of practical applications and shaping content and capabilities on Digital Signage. I whined a bunch on another post HERE that not enough thought was given to what content goes on on Digital Signage and we’re only starting to see how consumers WANT to use them/it (i.e. no more news, weather, sports)

I look at the functionality Rogers just provided and saw linkages with:

  • customer support (press a button and see the face of the support person you’re talking to)
  • Price comparisons on screen (using advanced picture recognition)
  • Shopping WITH someone online by showing them videos and having them interact with a web cam
  • Tie ins to social networks
  • and more…

Sure some of these may be a bit far off but it’s nice to see a carrier finally giving something away and educating people on how to use the technology they sell….

….oh yeah and they’ll make a HEAP in data services.

Hey, you always say you never watch TV!!!

Rogers manages to nail me for $300-plus a month just on plain old phone calls and checking e-mails from the road. I can’t even fathom the size of the forklift needed to deliver my bill if video calling is turned on. I’ve not read the details, but my guess is the service is free but the traffic ain’t.
