Blog Powered Digital Signage Management
I found this kind of interesting and cute.
The guys and gals over at the University of Virginia

have put together a digital signage network for campus communications and sounds like they’re having fun with it.
What I found cute was they decided to use a blog to manage content - Wordpress.com no less, which powers this blog.
Read the post here: http://betech.virginia.edu/index.php/2007/03/22/blog-powered-digital-signage/. They then use an Opera browser to read from the blog
It’s pretty basic and allows for minimal editing and content updates using a couple of free widgets available for use with Wordpress.
It’s not as sophisticated as one would need for ad driven networks or more advanced capabilities - for example dayparting for ads or scheduled content for relevant day by day info for students - but it’s a cheap and cheerful way of getting up and running quickly.
There’s a bunch of open source or free/open source software out there now for managing networks. For example:

and even some of the big guys are giving away the software…I think either Panasonic or Samsung is doing this. Tough gig if your value prop is only software, I would guess.
