I’m always fascinated by what draws people to various industries. Personally, I’m drawn by complexity, challenge and the opportunity to accomplish something meaningful to me. It’s not always about the money (sheesh - if only -thought I’d be retired by now)
Many of the folks I know, however, are constantly after that pot-o-gold - it’s an obsession for them.
I used to do some work in the mobile space and I saw something that caught my eye. Last year, in all of the US, the entire mobile marketing industry apparently generated a miniscule $421 million in revenue: See Here. This is an industry that is 7-8 years old here in terms of market exposure as an emerging market. $421 million is nothing in the grand scheme of things.
Compare that to Digital Signage Industry, for which numbers are sometimes foggy to get but the industry, at maybe 4-5 years old (I’m talking max/recognized as an emerging industry) was estimated at 1-2 Billion in 2006 (depending on who you talk to) and is forecasted to be anywhere from 4-10 Billion by 2012 (2-4 billion of that coming in ad dollars, the rest in various infrastructure and management plays).
So I guess the fascination for me is; man is there a lot of work to do in the Digital Signage business and man am I glad I’m not in mobile marketing (I do need to make a living
) !
Fear not those who have been in the business a while! Apparently your time is coming!
